I live and work in United States and went to Montreal for Leonard Cohen's exhibition. One cold night, I got lost on my way to a Chinese restaurant. The area was close to downtown but not exactly in the center of the city. The streets near me were dark and quiet, not much traffic. But the tall bright buildings and noise of traffic and people was just a couple of blocks away and I could feel the lively atmosphere coming from there. I looked around and just didn't feel lonely or isolated at all, which was a surprise to me. I could feel, even in dark, the heartbeat of the city. I felt myself a calm outsider to it but at the same time connected to everything of it. It was a great experience.
After I came back to work, I couldn't stop thinking about that night and how I felt at that moment. So I grabbed a couple of markers and drew the night on a paper. The green circles are street blocks, they don't look square because the corners and edges are blurry in moonlight; the small orange rectangle are the places I was looking for; the Pink dots are the locations of myself--I wasn't sure where I was, it could be anywhere;the pink lines are the choices I might make to take me to different possibilities.
It was a magnificent night.
